SWIM ENGLAND EAST MIDLANDS SWIMMING CLUB OF THE YEAR

- RUNNER UP 2023

Ian Hicks, Head Coach

Ian has an impressive record both as a swimmer and a coach.  He swam for Beckenham Swimming Club in South London where he was a teammate of Olympic Gold medallist Duncan Goodhew.  As a competitive swimmer, Ian was successful at national level winning the British Junior Championships three times at 200m Butterfly and 400m Individual Medley in 1973 and 1974 and becoming both the short and long course English and British record holder for 200m Individual Medley, 400m Individual Medley and 200m Butterfly.  Ian was also Regional Swimmer of the year in 1974.  In 1978, Ian was gold medallist in five events at the Scottish Open National Championships.  Unfortunately, in the same year, a back injury ended Ian's competitive career.

Ian has a wealth of coaching experience undertaking the role of Head Coach at several clubs including Bracknell, Beckenham London Borough of Ealing, Sudbury Storms and Rykneld.  Ian has sixteen years of swim instructional experience at national level with over nine national champions coached.

In 1986, Ian was instrumental in setting up Swimathon, a charity event which is still going strong.
